Shell's Dream

Shell's awfully nice adventures in the magic faraway house

"What a lovely sunny day", thought Shell to herself as she woke up. It was almost nice enough for a picnic with sandwiches and pop. And luckily enough kind Aunty Davina had left some in the larder for her.
"Oh how simply spiffing!", thought Shell, "I think I shall go exploring today, and see what's in the forest at the end of the field." She dressed in her favourite fairy princess outfit, and headed out across the meadow.
The forest was big, dark and scary, and Shell was sure there must be evil goblins lurking in the shadows, but she was a brave little girl and kept on walking.
Suddenly she noticed a clearing ahead of her, and a funny looking house in the middle of it. The house looked topsy turvy, with windows at the bottom and a door at the top, and strange painted handprints all over it. There was a funny staircase leading past the windows up towards the door. Shell took a deep breath, and stood on the first step. She had a feeling that lots of strange things would happen in a house that looked so odd.
Watching her step all the way, Shell reached the first window and peered in. And she saw the most peculiar sight - a tall bald man was dancing like a robot, while a funny-looking bald creature waved its arms around as if swatting invisible flies. "How queer!" said Shell, hurrying by before they saw her.
The steps got awfully narrow then, and Shell had to dance on her tiptoes, but luckily she was used to doing that anyway.
Soon she came to a very small window, and peeked into it a little anxiously. What funny creatures would she see this time? As she was looking in, a face came up to the window from inside and looked right back at her. It was a girl about Shell's age, with a large round head. Moonface opened the window and leaned out. "Hiya Chick", she said, in a funny sounding voice. Nobody Shell knew talked in such a silly way! Moonface beckoned for Shell to come in, and she carefully jumped inside.
Another lady came over to see her, but Shell couldn't understand what she said. "She must be one of those funny foreigners", thought Shell, "Mummy told me not to talk to them, they're dirty and smelly". There was a small boy in the room too, but he didn't seem to know how to speak.
Moonface offered Shell some cake, cutting a small slice for Shell and eating the rest of the cake herself. Shell offered them some of her pop, but apparently there had been some kind of argument and they weren't allowed to drink pop any more.
She thanked them for the cake, and set off again through the window. A funny man ran past her shouting something about Aunty Davina, throwing plates down at the ground. He seemed very angry, but Shell didn't know why.
The next sight was even stranger: two burly men dressed in black were carrying a hysterical girl down the steps away from the house, while an old lady with horrid hair barged past them trying to get in! "What a very strange house indeed", thought Shell.
She took another few steps forward, then stopped for a rest. She could see all the way up to the roof from there, and watched a scruffy-looking cat pacing back and forth on the tiles. Shell was sure that a nice saucer of milk was all the cat would need to come down.
After her rest, Shell carried on walking, and made it all the way to the front door. She tried to get in the door, but something was blocking it - when she looked closer, she could see what. Two peculiar chaps, one in a dressing gown, the other in pyjamas, were growling at her. They seemed to know about new-fangled aeroplanes, as they were talking about flying and radars. Shell wanted to tell them to leave her alone, but she was just a little girl and wasn't strong enough to speak up. Luckily someone else came over and made the funny lion men run away.
When Shell looked to see who it was, she could hardly believe her eyes - there in front of her was another blonde princess! "How simply super", thought Shell, "I can make a cracking new friend". The nice blonde girl opened the door wide and welcomed her in, and they had a lovely time eating Shell's sandwiches and drinking her pop.
When it started to get dark outside, Shell didn't want to leave, but she knew that if she came back another day, the magic faraway house and all its funny little characters would still be there to greet her.
